Don’t Dig a Pit
by Tanya Person

Scripture: I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. – Psalm 40:1-2, NIV

Message: Do you know that God has lifted you out of the slimy pit and set your feet on a rock? Has he given you a firm place to stand? Psalm 40 starts with David saying how God has lifted him up.

Many of us have had times when God has lifted us up. We have been set free from various things in our lives. We have many people who have come through the ministry and have confessed and repented and forgiven and been forgiven. It is such a great feeling to know that you have been forgiven and we feel so light when we have been set free from the strongholds the enemy had over us! We feel confident as we continue on our path with the Lord.

Further on in Psalm 40, in verses 11-13, David says, “Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord; may your love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. Be pleased to save me, Lord; come quickly, Lord, to help me.” But he just said in verses 1-2 that God rescued him! The problem is the enemy continues to dig pits in our paths and set traps for us. Sometimes we see the pit in the path and avoid it, but other times we trip and fall.

What do we do in those times when we fall? We have a choice! Sometimes we sit there in the pit and we start digging ourselves deeper into the pit! Other times, we do what David did in this Psalm. We look up and ask the Lord to come and help us out of the pit.

I want to encourage you today, if you have fallen into a pit, don’t remain there. Use the following prayer as a start to ask God to help you out Remember what it says in Philippians 1:6, ‘being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.’ Jesus will continue to do His good work in you as you yield to Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the times You have rescued me! Forgive me for the times when I have fallen in the pit and stayed there, making it even deeper! Lord, I ask You to help me now. Forgive my sin and rescue me out of the pit that I am in. (Personalise this for your situation.) Thank You that You will finish the work that You have started in me. I trust You to do Your work. Amen.
