The Place of Waiting
by Stephanie Poulin

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. – Psalm 18:30, NIV

David is a fascinating biblical character. When I am battling with my emotions and times of uncertainty in life, I try to do what David did. Many times, in the Psalms, David reminded himself of who God is and His faithfulness to him.

In Psalm 18 there’s an introduction that says David was writing this as a psalm of praise to the Lord after being rescued from the hands of his enemies, including from King Saul. I find it interesting that David did not write this psalm after being crowned king in Jerusalem. He did not write it after seeing the fulfillment of God’s promise to him that he would be the next king of Israel. He was writing it after being delivered from Saul. He might actually have been writing it from the inside of a cave.

David spent fourteen years waiting for God’s promise to him to be fulfilled, and seven of those years were spent on the run, hiding in caves from King Saul, who was constantly trying to kill him! And yet this is the place where David is writing this psalm. It was not after he was settled on the throne in Jerusalem and could say with certainty that God’s word to him had proved true. It was while he was still waiting for that promise happen.

I don’t know about you, but I find some of the hardest places in life are the places of waiting. They can be places filled with doubt and fear, and I imagine that David had plenty of time to question whether what God said to him would come true or not. But in that place of waiting, he wrote these words, ‘This God – his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.’

Can I invite you today to join me, if you are in a place of uncertainty? Let’s take refuge in the Lord and He will be a shield for us, while we wait on Him. God is the same God for us as He was for David, and we can safely put our trust in Him.

Prayer: Father, we come to You today and we ask You to help us trust in You, as David did. You are a good father, and we know that You are able to work out Your plans for our lives. And we ask that You will be a shield for us today, as we take refuge in You. Amen.
