SCRIPTURE: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The road you choose determines the place you end.
Decision is very critical to the fulfilment of destiny. Nothing moves forward without a choice. If you wait for chances, the only result you would have is a fall. Things may fall by chance, but nothing rises without a choice.
We see in the scripture how Jacob fulfilled destiny by the force of decision.
It was through decision that Jacob negotiated and got the birthright from Esau and ended up as the carrier of the Abrahamic blessings (Genesis 25:29-34). Jacob was born second to Esau, so what we should have been saying is,
“The Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Esau…” But Jacob examined the circumstance of his birth, and saw how great the Abrahamic blessing was. I believe he must have thought within himself, “So it means that this fountain of blessing running through our family may bypass me. Was I born into this family for nothing? Does it mean my birth position will deprive me of this blessing?”
So, he began to strategize until he found a solution. He realized that his brother loved temporary things above permanent matters. Esau loved immediate food above his future. So, Jacob strategically positioned himself for the transaction. One day, Esau came in hungry, and said to Jacob, “I need food.” Jacob must have said, “That is a small matter. Just sell me your birth right and I will give you the food you need.” Esau said, “I am about to die; what is the benefit of a birthright to a dying man? Jacob must have thought within himself, “That is why I am about to collect it” (Genesis 25:29-34 Paraphrased).
They did the transaction. It was not written, but it looks to me like their mother was a witness. The Scripture says, Esau walked away and despised his birthright (Genesis 25:34). And Jacob collected the birthright. From that day in the archive of eternity, Jacob became the first born, and Esau the second. Thus, Jacob was the second born by birth, but he became the first born by choice.
The position of birth is the most difficult thing to change, but Jacob changed it by the force of choice. So, when it was time for the children to be blessed, and the father asked Esau to go and bring food, so he could receive the blessing of the first born, it was an error. It was an error because Esau was no longer the firstborn. Heaven sealed and honoured the transfer of birthright because they watched the transaction. Isaac eventually blessed Jacob, and the blessing could not be reversed.
Now, let us look at the profits of decision
1. Decision determines destination. The road you choose determines the place you end. Your choices determine your chances.
2. Decision determines distinction. To take a stand is to stand out. David took a stand, and he stood out.
3. Decision brings deliverance. Your decision is key to your deliverance.
4. Decision cures frustration. There are choices you make that deliver you from suffering. The choice of Peter to give his ship to Jesus delivered him from the frustration of fruitless labour (Luke 5:1-6).
5. Decision undergirds destiny. Where you are today is a product of the choices you made yesterday and where you will be tomorrow will be determined by today’s choices.
The question is, what kind of decisions are critical for destiny?
a. The decision to be everything God wants you to be in this life. (Philippians 3:12-13).
b. The decision to know what it takes to be everything God wants you to be in life (Philippians 3:10).
c. The decision to do what it takes to be who God wants you to be in life.
Remember this: The road you choose determines the place you end.
ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Make the right decision; take note of the critical destiny decision outlined in today’s lesson.
2. If you have made a wrong decision, ask God for mercy and seek direction to the right path.
PRAYER: Lord, I ask for grace to make the right decision in life. Help me to fulfill my destiny, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
