TOPIC: The Burden Against Moab

OPENING PRAYER: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 15:1-16:14

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

The Moabites were the descendants of an incestuous relationship between Lot and one of his daughters (Genesis 19:30-38). Moab had a connection with Israel in at least three ways: Lot was Abraham’s nephew, Ruth, an ancestress of King David, (and later of the Lord Jesus Christ, Matthew 1:5) was a Moabite and thirdly, David entrusted his father and mother to the protection of the king of Moab when he was a fugitive from Saul (1 Samuel 22:3-4). The people of Moab later became a great nation, and, at times, they were great enemies of Israel (see for example Numbers 22-25, Judges 3:12-30).

Notice the sin that Moab committed, and which attracted God’s judgment (16:6-12; see also Jeremiah 48:1-13). Pride always goes before a fall and God does not share His glory with idols. No one is immune to pride. The attacks on Moab came through its villages (15:1-2) which resulted in a nation-wide mourning (15:2b-4). Even God mourned for Moab (15:5-8). This passage parallels Jeremiah 48. See Moabites’ experiences as refugees in 15:9; 16:1-2. What is their state like? What advice does God have for those nations hosting the refugees in 16:3-5?

PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
Thought: That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.” James 4:6

Prayer: Dear God, save us from pride.
