TOPIC: The Gospel of Jesus Christ

OPENING PRAYER: Sanctify my life dear Lord as I study your word in Jesus name.

INTRODUCTION TO ROMANS
Romans is believed to have been written by Paul at about AD 57 while on his third missionary journey and was at Corinth. The church in Rome was a predominantly Gentile congregation with quite several Jews. His theme is the basic gospel: God’s plan of salvation for all people, Jews and Gentiles alike. God’s righteousness is made available through the gospel of His son Jesus Christ and all men can now come into God’s presence and be fitted and accepted before him. Various reasons could have prompted the writing of Romans including:

1. To establish a relationship with the church, to prepare the way for his visit to Rome and to enlist support for his proposed mission to Spain (1:10-15; 15:22-29).
2. To present the basic truths of the gospel. None of Paul’s other letters so thoroughly presents the content of the gospel and its implication both now and in the future like Romans.

Romans emphasizes basic Christian doctrine. Most of us struggle to understand basic subjects like sin and death, salvation, grace, faith, righteousness, justification, sanctification redemption, resurrection, and glorification, etc. Romans compresses all the themes of the Bible, bringing them together and finding their fulfilment and meaning in Christ. The Good News of Jesus Christ is more than a fact to be believed, it is a life to be lived, a life of righteousness befitting of God’s people who have been justified by Christ.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide MESSAGE

The word “Gospel” means good news. It is good news about Jesus Christ. God in His love and mercy has revealed how man can be saved and made righteous before Him through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This was anticipated in God’s blessing to Abraham (Genesis 12:3) and was foretold by the prophets (v.2). Three fundamental things about the gospel comes out clearly:

1.The preacher of the gospel as seen in the life of Paul (vs.1, 5, 9, 11-16). Take note of the three “I am” (vs.14, 15, 16). Do you have a personal sense of calling and obligation to preach the gospel?
2.The gospel itself – what it is all about (vs.2-4; cf. Mark 1:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Any gospel other than the gospel of Christ (His person and what He did on the cross) is no gospel at all.
3.What the gospel does (vs.5-8, 16-17). Through the gospel, people from all nations are called to obedience to belong to Christ.

The gospel is God’s only way and method of getting people saved and made righteous before Him. No one is saved without hearing and believing the good news about Christ.

Practice/Word Application
AND SO: Reflect on vs.14-17; cf. 1 Corinthians 9:16-17. Pray that God would give you this kind of heart and attitude for preaching the gospel.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
