TOPIC: You Are Neither Cold Nor Hot
BIBLE READING
Revelation 3:14-22
14 “And to the [a]angel of the church [b]of the Laodiceans write,
‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither [c]cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.[d] Therefore be [e]zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
22 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ ”

Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th August 2026 – OUTLINE
Nothing bad was said about the church in Philadelphia and nothing good was said about the church in Laodicea. Jesus continues to reveal different aspects of Himself. Note here His kingship (Revelation 3:14b) and relate it to the throne mentioned in Revelation 3:21. Many think there is wisdom in lukewarmness but God completely dislikes it (Revelation 3:15-16).
It may also refer to seeking to sit on the fence; or looking for a neutral ground which really does not exist. It is always difficult to help someone who does not know that he needs help (Revelation 3:17). The Lord exposed their spiritual state to them in three main areas: – their poverty, blindness, nakedness. For each of these areas, there is a solution from God (see Revelation 3:18).
Incidentally, Laodicea was the wealthiest city in Phrygia; had textile industry and medical school. Nevertheless, the things that really matter are those of eternal value. Only God can supply real spiritual treasures (gold), righteousness (white garment), and spiritual healing for their eyes. God’s discipline is out of love, and for correction (Revelation 3:19). It may be difficult for someone to hear Christ knocking on the door of one’s heart if the person is living a life of self-satisfaction, luxury and complacency.
CLOSING PRAYER
Pray for those you know who have not opened their hearts to Jesus Christ.
