Scripture Union Daily Guide 7th June 2020 Outline
Death is inevitable for all men (Hebrews 9:27). However, it is quite painful when it involves someone we love. Observe that the man, who brought the sad news of the death of Saul and Jonathan to David, was actually telling lies. He claimed to be the one who killed Saul with the expectation that David would be happy and would reward him for it. Compare vv.5–10 with 1 Samuel 31:4–5.
How do we practise this kind of behaviour today? Read vv.11–12 again and take note of how David reacted to the news. Recall that King Saul had sought to kill David several times in the past, still David was not happy to hear of his death. What a Christlike man! How do you react to news, especially of a misfortune befalling a rival or a perceived enemy?
What reward did the Amalekite get for his lies (vv.14–16)? We live in days when fake news is flying around freely, especially on the social media. We must be careful what news we spread and our motive for doing so, else we find ourselves in the trouble for which we never bargained.
Practice/Word Application
• And So: Are you in the habit of spreading unverified news, especially on social media? It is better to desist from such habit right away.
Sacrifices
In the Old Testament, sacrifices were at the heart of the worship of God. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is our atoning sacrifice. The sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ became the basis of our personal sacrifices not the killing of animals to appease Him but the sacrifices of our lives wholly surrendered and dedicated to Him which should find expression in charitable deeds and use of our resources to praise Him. God prefers us as living sacrifices.
Prayer Points
• Lord, give me a Christlike heart, so that I will take no pleasure in the downfall of my enemies, but rather pray for them.
• Thank God for Jesus who by His death on the cross, took away our curse and granted us access into the blessings of Abraham.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 1:28
