Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 August 2026 – OUTLINE

The church in Sardis is diagnosed as “having a reputation of being alive but is dead” (Revelation 3:1) and those who are asleep are about to die (Revelation 3:2-3)! What makes a church dead? See Colossians 3:5-10 for a hint! The depth of Sardis’s backslidden state requires a mighty shake-up. If that is the description of any church or individual Christian, the remedy is to wake up! – and Revelation 3:3 shows how.

Thank God for the tremendous numerical growth of the church in Africa. Does this growth reflect a spiritual awakening? As important as numbers are, our faith should reflect changed lives. Lots of activities without fruit bearing makes us ineffective and unproductive (See 2 Peter 1:5-9). Unfinished work produces no result. Of what benefit is a race that does not get to the finishing line?

While starting is appropriate, finishing is even more important and beneficial; hence Scripture regularly reminds us not only to begin the Christian race but to finish it successfully. Check how Paul finished his in 2 Timothy 4:7. Notice that although there is nothing to commend the church in Sardis for, the Lord, however, does not forget “the few people who have not soiled their clothes” (Revelation 3:4) – i.e. those who do not live in sin (Revelation 3:5). Identify five rewards awaiting such people.

Closing Prayer
Examine your personal life. Which areas need to “wake up”? Pray that the Lord will revive you spiritually.
