Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 June 2022 MESSAGE
Isaac was the carrier of Gods covenant blessings (Genesis 17:19) and therefore Abraham was very careful as to who he marries. There was the tendency of being led into idol worship by a Canaanite woman since that was the form of worship prevailing in the land.
Therefore, Abraham carefully ensured that his son Isaac did not fall into their trap. Observe measures he put in place (vs.1‐9) to ensure Isaac has the right woman. Hand under thigh was a way of making a vow very solemn.
The faithful chief servant (v.2) is never named but is likely Eliezer of Damascus (15:2), and maybe among the 318 trained members of Abraham’s household (14:14). His training likely included military prowess, knowledge of the terrain, and faith in the Lord, as manifested in his prayers and preparations.
Taking a wife for Isaac was serious business for everyone. Why would you think so? Apart from the measures Abraham put in place (vs.1‐9), notice the other elaborate preparations: a. Delegation and Gifts (bride price?) (vs.10,30). b. Prayers and faith (vs.12‐14). c.
Expectancy and follow up action (vs.15‐23) The servant chose character over beauty, appearance and other physical traits, though she was well endowed. A bride for a godly heir to a rich Master was something worth depending on God for.
Practice/Word Application
