Scripture Union Daily Guide – 7 December 2025 | OUTLINE
The people of Ziph made a second visit to Saul to betray David (1 Samuel 26:1. See also 1 Samuel 23:19-20). What could be possible reasons for this? They, like King Saul, were from the tribe of Benjamin and may have felt threatened that they would lose the kingship to the tribe of Judah, David’s tribe. How much does your tribal affiliation influence your judgment?
According to 1 Samuel 26:8, do you agree with Abishai that it was a golden opportunity provided by God for David to eliminate his enemy? See Romans 12:17-21. What do we learn from this? Notice David’s response to Abishai in 1 Samuel 26:9. He would not lay his hand on Saul; the person God had made king, even though sparing Saul’s life would prolong his suffering and delay his becoming king. This is an example of wholehearted surrender to the authority that is ordained by God despite its frailty. Jesus Christ, though He was God, insisted that John the Baptist should baptise Him even though John himself felt he was unfit for it (Matthew 3:13-16). David understood that all authority is from God (Romans 13:1).
Once again, Saul realizes his foolishness in pursuing David. God continues to embarrass him and his security forces before David. The words of David (1 Samuel 26:18-20,22-24) were so moving that they would have left Saul feeling very embarrassed. He finally accepted defeat (1 Samuel 26:25a). Was that a true repentance?
And So
David continued to wait patiently for God’s timing to ascend to the throne. Do we have examples of this kind of humility and loyalty to leadership today?

Hymn – Victory Ahead
1. When the hosts of Israel led by God,
Round the walls of Jericho softly trod,
Trusting in the Lord,
They felt the conqueror’s tread,
By faith they saw the victory ahead.
Refrain: Victory ahead, victory ahead,
Through the blood of Jesus, victory ahead.
Trusting in the Lord, I hear the conqueror’s tread,
By faith I see the victory ahead.
2. David with a shepherd’s sling and five stones,
Met the giant on the field all alone,
Trusting in the Lord, he knew what God had said,
By faith he saw the victory ahead.
3. Daniel prayed unto the Lord thrice each day,
Then unto the lion’s den led the way,
Trusting in the Lord, he did not fear or dread,
By faith he saw the victory ahead.
4. Often with the carnal mind I was tried,
Asking for deliverance oft I cried,
Trusting in the Lord, I reckoned I was dead,
By faith I see the victory ahead.
5. When like those who’ve gone before to that land,
By death’s river cold and dark I shall stand.
Trusting in the Lord, I will not fear or dread,
By faith I see the victory ahead.
Closing Prayer
Pray for grace to wait upon the Lord to bring about His purpose in your life.
