Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th May 2020 Outline

Solomon is a good father, teacher and counsellor to his son. He is an example of a good father to this generation. Notice other attributes of a good father in this text. Solomon counsels his son from his own life experience to seek, acquire, embrace and cherish wisdom (vv.5–8). His parents taught him the same, while he was a child.

No wonder when God, at the beginning of his reign as King of Israel, asked him to ask anything he wants, he humbly requested for wisdom (1 Kings 3:5–9). His answer gladdened God’s heart. He gave Solomon wisdom and added other blessings he did not request for (riches, honour, and long life). Solomon admonished his son to use everything to get wisdom, for wisdom is the principal thing that can make him great (vv.8–9).

Identify in vv.10–27 the blessings that come with acquisition of wisdom. Wisdom will keep our feet from stumbling, keep us from wicked ways, corrupt and perverse speech. Wisdom produces long life (v.10).

Wisdom guards the heart (well spring of life) and body v.23. This wisdom is personified in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:30). Jesus Christ admonishes us to seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness and all the other blessings we desire will be given to us.
