Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th March 2024 TOPIC: One of You Will Betray Me

OPENING PRAYER: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: John 13:21-30

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?

DAILY GUIDE FOR TODAY, MARCH 6, 2024 MESSAGE:

It is almost unthinkable that after following Jesus for a period of about three years, listening to all that He taught and seeing all the miracles, one of His own very disciples would betray Him. His disciples were, therefore, shocked to hear His declaration (v.21). Jesus Himself was troubled as He said it. “Lord, who is it?” was not such an easy question to ask. But Jesus knew all along who it was and to let them know how serious it was, He gave them a sign (see vs.26-27)?

Appearances are often not what things really are. Judas was not a mean disciple. He was the group’s treasurer, a position of significant responsibility. We often still measure people that way today. ‘Oh, he is a deacon’ or ‘she is the leader of the women’s ministry,’ etc. But God alone searches and knows the true state of the heart. Judas was not who he appeared to be. He threw away caution, even with the opportunity the Lord gave him to retrace his steps. So, ‘Satan entered into him.’ Even though it had been prophesied that Jesus would be betrayed, Judas still exposed himself to be tempted and he fell. This is a significant lesson for us all. Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 and James 1:13-14 and note what these texts tell us about temptations.
