TOPIC: Seeking help from false gods

OPENING PRAYER: Open my eyes O Lord that I might behold wondrous things from your word in Jesus name.

INTRODUCTION TO 2 KINGS
In the book of 2 Kings, we read of evil rulers, rampant idolatry and a complacent populace. Despite the pressure to conform, a minority of the people moved in the opposite direction, towards God. The Bethel prophet and others, as well as two righteous kings, spoke God’s word and stood for Him. As you read 2 Kings, watch these courageous individuals.

2 Kings covers almost 300 years of Israelite history and records the reigns of 26 kings over Judah and Israel.

Even amid catastrophes, God continued to display His miraculous power through Elisha, after taking up the mantle from Elijah. 2 Kings also shows the tragedy that resulted from lives lived in disobedience to God and full of self will.

The message of 2 Kings still rings true today. The nation, leader, or person who obeys the Lord will receive His blessings and benefits. Those who insist upon their own way or who refuse to turn back to God and receive His forgiveness, will reap its consequences.

SCRIPTURE: 2 King 1:1-18

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

MESSAGE: Ahaziah’s fall was a natural accident that could happen to anybody. Unfortunately, he turned to a false god to inquire about the outcome of his injury (v.2). Take note of the question in vs.3, 6, &16. What do you think God was trying to tell Ahaziah by this question?

By sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of the Philistines, Ahaziah was rebelling against Almighty God. He was despising the name of the God of Israel and behaving as if God was powerless. His action would bring disrepute to the name of God. In what ways are we bringing disrepute to Christ today?

It is not uncommon today to see so-called Christians going to seek healing and guidance from false gods, witchdoctors, fortune-tellers, etc. Some seek security in material possessions, money, powers, certificates, and other fleeting things of this life rather than in God Almighty. What warning is there for us about this in 1 John 2:15-16?

God, in His love, sent Elijah to correct Ahaziah but instead of repenting, he wanted to arrest God’s servant (vs.9-14). How do you usually respond to God’s rebuke? But are we to call fire down from heaven to destroy our enemies as Elijah did? See Luke 9:51-56; Matthew 5:43-48.

Practice/Word Application
And So? Don’t let problems drive you to seek help from false gods. Only the word from God is a sure help!

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Lord, may I trust in you alone whatever challenges I may face in life!

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 43:16 ‐ 19

PRAYER FOCUS
A BALM IN GILEAD
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him…..
– James 5:14

THANK GOD FOR:
► All He did to ensure that we are healed.
► Bearing in His body our sins so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
PRAY FOR:
► Diligence as we listen to our God so that none of the diseases of the Egyptians will be found among us.
► Brethren who are currently sick that the Lord will extend His hands of healing to them.
► The Brethren to visit and pray with the Brethren who due to illness have been out of fellowship.

PRAY AGAINST:
► Forgetting and forsaking sick brethren instead of visiting and encouraging them to keep on.
► Lack of steadfastness and application of Godly wisdom especially when trials, difficulties and sicknesses come.
