Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 September 2023 Outline:
What would you do differently if you, like Hezekiah, knew when the Lord would call you home? Although this knowledge is hidden from us, the Bible instructs us to prepare. Note Moses’ prayer in Psalm 90:12. A heart of wisdom requires that we “prepare to meet (our) Lord” (Amos 4:12). This means, be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Isaiah told Hezekiah, “Put your house in order” (v.1). Besides preparing a Will, how else would you put your house in order?
Hezekiah’s prayer to be spared death (v.3) identifies three key elements of a close walk with God—faithfulness, righteousness, and whole-hearted devotion. Hezekiah had his earthly life extended by 15 years. Our God is compassionate and hears our desperate cry for help and answers according to His will. Hezekiah’s healing gives him the opportunity to “go up to the temple of the Lord” (v.5). We are spared by God for a purpose, chief among them being to worship and serve Him.
How did the excitement of healing blind the king about wise judgment in the affair of the Babylonian envoys (vs.12-18)? Although he was responsible for the predicted future distress, note his heartless response when Isaiah told him about it (v.19). How do Philippians 2:4 and Ezekiel 22:30 address this insensitivity?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Please, Lord, help me to be self-controlled and wise when I am excited. Let me seek not only my welfare but the good of others.
