Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 May 2022 Topic: Christian in the society

Opening Prayer: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:11‐25

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 5 May 2022 MESSAGE

As Christians, we should constantly remind ourselves of who we are: strangers in this world. Our conduct should reflect this (vs.11‐12). Others may engage in all kinds of corruption and evil behaviour, we cannot. They belong here. We are citizens of heaven (v.11). Peter also gives us some principles to guide our relationship with earthly authorities. See vs.13 ‐17; cf. Romans 13:1,2.

But if ordered to do any ungodly thing, our first loyalty must be to the highest authority (see Peter’s example in Acts 4:19, 5:27‐29). When this happens, however, we should be fully prepared to bear the consequences of our action, as Christ Himself did. God demands from us not eye service but faithful service.

Are you giving faithful service to your employer and to God? In vs.18‐21, Peter gives us a Christian perspective on how to live in an imperfect society where righteous people are persecuted.

He did not endorse the system, but he admitted it. Jesus did no wrong, but he had confidence that God would act justly on his behalf (vs.22‐23). Jesus values everyone. He died for the master, slave, tyrant, oppressed, wealthy as well as the poor.

Practice/Word Application
Reflection: How do you react when you are treated unfairly because of your status, ethnic group, race, or religion?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS Scripture Verse
1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown.

  1. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary.

  2. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see, For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.

  3. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share.

Closing Prayer
• Pray today for all those who are suffering for the sake of the gospel.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with 1 Thessalonians 5:23
