SCRIPTURE READING
Luke 4:14-21
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [a]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are [b]oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Scripture Union Daily Guide – 5 January 2026 | OUTLINE
Yesterday’s reading started with “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan…” where He was baptized by John. Today, we read about His return to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:14). In the power of the Holy Spirit, He taught in various synagogues. Dependence on God’s Spirit precedes any success in ministry. Read Luke 4:16 again and note what the Master’s custom was. What identifies you as a Christian in your community? What is your custom?
We noted on Friday that John knew His mission and he focussed on it. His mission was declared by the angel to Zechariah, his father. In today’s passage, Jesus also clearly declared His mission as prophesied by Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1,2). He came to pronounce salvation to those who identify with their spiritual poverty and deliverance for those who are physically and spiritually bound by the evil one or suffering from spiritual blindness or oppression. We will see how Jesus fulfils this mission as we go through this book of the gospel. From Christ’s mission statement, what should be our own mission if indeed we are His followers?
Proclamation of the gospel message and care for the needy must go together if we are to be true heralds of His kingdom.
