TOPIC: “I Have Heard Your Prayers”
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
Scripture; 2 KINGS 19: 20-37
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
How assuring for the king in distress to receive the message Prophet Isaiah sent to him (v.1)! The heart of the message may well be: “I have heard your prayers . . .” No matter how long or different a response we receive for our prayers, the assuring truth is that God hears our prayers (1 John 5:14-15).
Isaiah’s prophecy against Assyria reveals several shortcomings of king Sennacherib— pride and blasphemy (v.22), self-trust (vs.23,24), arrogance (vs.23,24) and rage against God (v.28). Five times in vs.23,24 alone he uses the phrase “I have . . . I have . . .” How does Proverbs 3:5,6 and James 4:6 help us to avoid such pitfall of pride and arrogance?
With all the boasting, observe what happened to the king of Assyria and his army (vs.35-37). Pride always goes before a fall. Note the role of angels in fighting the Lord’s battles. See Psalm 91:11-12 and Matthew 18:10 for other functions of angels in helping us. We however pray to and worship God, not angels. God’s rescue intervention (vs.32-37) is similar to David’s description of the Lord’s spectacular deliverance (Psalm 18:3-18).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank you that you hear me when I pray. Let me never stop approaching your throne of grace that I may receive mercy and find grace to help me in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 40:2
