David was said to be a man after God’s heart (1 Samuel 13:14 or Acts 13:22), not because he was sinless but because he was always God–conscious and would readily respond to God’s prompting about his life. His positive disposition to God drew God’s attention to him. God reached down, took hold of him and drew him out of deep waters of affliction.

There is no depth of suffering or affliction out of which God cannot pull us if our walk with him is right and he is delighted in us. In vv.21–28, we see that the means that can enhance our deliverance. These include our righteous acts, our obedience and our faithfulness. God’s mercy and justice are always there for the upright and faithful.

The outcome of such intervention includes darkness being turned to light, fortification against the enemy, enabling strength to overcome obstacles and to stand after the conflict (Ephesians 6:13). The understanding that God is the source of our victory should prompt our hearts always to be full of gratitude.

Practice/Word Application:
• Thought: “God is a shield for all who take refuge in him . . . He makes my way perfect”.
Watchman: In the biblical tradition, the watchman’s assigned duty is to stand on the city wall and warn the people of approaching danger. He would always alert them of any danger that threatened so that they would take action to save their lives.

Christians are the spiritual watchmen assigned to warn the people of the impeding eternal judgement. They are to warn sinners about the consequences of their actions. They will be held responsible if they refuse to warn them of the coming judgement.

Prayer Points:
• Lord, I put my trust wholly in you. Show me all–round mercy through your Son, Jesus Christ.
• Thank God for the blood of Jesus that was shed for our salvation and total deliverance.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Haggai 2:5
