Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st January 2026 — Outline
Jesus performed miracles in the preceding verses of today’s reading. John the Baptist, who was in prison, was told about these miracles (Luke 7:18).
Recall the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist (John 1:29,33-35). Apart from being cousins, John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus and having received first hand revelation from God, introduced Jesus as the Messiah to the people. Out of doubt, John sends his disciples to confirm Jesus’ identity. We sometimes doubt if God cares at all amid our trials. We should not allow the trials of life to make us doubt God, especially, when we have experienced His goodness and mighty power in the past.
Compare Luke 7:21-22 with Isaiah 35:3-6 & Isaiah 61:1-3. What does this tell you about Jesus? In life, one may be faced with disapproval by men. At such times, if we know God’s purpose in our lives, and focus on doing it faithfully, those who try to discredit us will be convinced of who we are. Jesus did not tell John’s disciples who he was by words. He referred to His work (See John 10:38).
And So
Focus on your God-given assignment and do it faithfully.
