Scripture Reading
Jeremiah 9:1-26
Question for Meditation
► Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
Scripture Union Daily Guide – 30 November 2025 | OUTLINE
How did Jeremiah identify with the sufferings of his people (Jeremiah 9:1-3; cf. Nehemiah 1:4)? What characterized the personal affairs of the people of Judah (Jeremiah 9:4-6)? Note that the ethical and moral standards of the people had collapsed, and they had refused to know God. Is this a picture of our nation today?
The consequences for Judah’s persistent refusal to listen to and obey God’s warning are clear (see Jeremiah 9:8-11). The land will be laid waste and even animals will abandon the land in search of food. From Jeremiah 9:12-22, even the wise, trained, wailing women and their daughters could not save the situation. Death would claim its victims without respect to age, gender or status. Their corpses would remain in the open like refuse (Jeremiah 9:22).
Read Jeremiah 9:23-24 again. What advice is there for us to heed? For the New Testament equivalent of Jeremiah 9:25-26, see Romans 2:25-29,1Corinthians 1:26-31. Baptism has meaning only when there is a definite experience of salvation through faith in Christ and change of heart.
Food for Thought
Reflect on v.24. How much do you allow God’s kindness, justice and righteousness to be seen in your daily life?

Hymn: Jerusalem on high
1. Jerusalem on high,
My song that city is,
My home whene’er I die,
The center of my bliss;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
2. Thy walls, sweet city, thine,
With pearls are garnishèd;
Thy gates with praises shine,
Thy streets with gold are spread;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
3. No sun by day shines there,
Nor moon by silent night;
Oh no! these needless are,
The Lamb’s the city’s light:
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
4. There dwells my Lord, my king,
Judged here unfit to live;
There angels to Him sing,
And lowly homage give;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
5. The patriarchs of old
There from their travels cease;
The prophets there behold
Their longed for Prince of Peace;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
6. The Lamb’s apostles there
T might with joy behold,
The harpers I might hear
Harping on harps of gold;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
7. The bleeding martyrs, they
Within those courts are found,
Clothèd in pure array,
Their scars with glory crowned;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
8. Ah me! ah me! that I
In Kedar’s tent here stay;
No place like that on high;
Lord, thither guide my way;
O happy place! When shall I be,
My God, with Thee, to see Thy face?
Closing Prayer
Help me, Lord, to pray more often and fervently for those going astray to turn from their wicked ways.
