Scripture Union Daily Guide 30 May 2020 Saturday

Topic: Transcendently immanent

Opening Prayer: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

Scripture: Psalm 113:1–9

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Outline: In this Psalm two extreme unrelated qualities are used to describe our God: He dwells on high above all nations and gods (transcendent, vv.4–5) but he condescends to relate with the earth (v.6). Matthew describes him as Emmanuel, God with us (immanent). Compare this to the pomposity or arrogance of our earthly kings and leaders (Daniel.4:28–32). Read vv.6–9 again and consider the condescension of God’s grace and goodness which very much illustrate one another and should evoke awe and worship from his creation (vv.1–3).

Praise is the eternal duty of all the saints. It is the only duty that transcends this earthly sojourn of man. There will be no sowing and reaping in heaven, no buying and selling there but the saints, like the 24 elders in Revelation 4:8–11, will be praising God 24 hours nonstop. Is it not simple divine wisdom for us to spend quality time, perfecting this art, the call to give God quality praise? Read v.1 again and notice how many times the Psalmist is calling on us to give God praise. From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, let his praises be on our lips (v.3).

Practice/Word Application
• And so: Think of his faithfulness to you and spend quality time today praising him with any instrument you can lay your hands upon.

Hymn for Today – Breathe Upon Us, Lord, from Heaven

1. Breathe upon us, Lord, from Heaven,
Fill us with the Holy Ghost;
Promise of the Father given,
Send us now a Pentecost.

Refrain
2. Breathe upon us, breathe upon us,
With Thy love our hearts inspire.
Breathe upon us, breathe upon us,
Lord, baptize us now with fire.

2. While the Spirit hovers o’er us,
Open all our hearts, we pray;
To Thine image, Lord, restore us,
Witness in our souls today.

3. Lift us, Lord, O lift us higher,
From the carnal mind set free;
Fill us with refining fire,
Give us perfect liberty.
