TOPIC: A Life-Changing Encounter With Jesus
OPENING PRAYER: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.
SCRIPTURE READING – Acts 9:1-9
1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?”
Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. [a]It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION:
► Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Many fierce opponents of the gospel today still behave like Saul (Acts 9:1-2). Disciples of the Way are being persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, and put to death in many countries by viciously determined and violent extremists. How do you feel towards such aggressive men and women?
Observe how Jesus disrupts Saul’s murderous journey in the most dramatic way possible (Acts 9:3-4). How do you understand Jesus’ disturbing question in Acts 9:4? What a shock for Saul to realise that in being ‘zealous for God’ by attacking the disciples of Jesus, he is in fact fighting God!
Saul, a leader full of assurance, is now neutralised and blinded and must be led by the hand as he obeys Jesus’ command (Acts 9:8). With this sudden divine encounter, Saul’s life is completely turned around. Spiritually blinded by hatred, he now physically enters a world of darkness for three days but he is humbled by this experience (Acts 9:9). How does the fact that Saul was supernaturally stopped in persecuting the Church encourage you today as you face your own challenges? Nothing is impossible to God!
