TOPIC: Who Are You Trusting?
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, may the entrance of your word bring light and life to all I will do today.
Scripture: 2 KINGS 18:17-37
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
SU Daily Guide 2 September 2023 Outline:
The field commander was wrong in his assumptions (vs.21,22). The king was, indeed, relying on God for help, not Egypt. Again, removing the high places (objects of idol worship) was for God, not against Him. When our Christian actions are misunderstood by unbelievers, we need not worry but continue to trust in God.
The field commander’s invitation to Hezekiah in v.23 and the lies he told in vs.24 and 33 are like the scheme of Satan using wicked people to cause us to compromise our faith. What truths counteract these lies?
The Lord Jesus instructs His followers to be wise as serpents while remaining as innocent as doves in dealing with people (Matthew 10:16). How wise was Hezekiah’s instruction to the people not to respond to the commander’s threats (v.36)? It is useful to guard our minds and hearts from listening to (or reading) and discussing unprofitable and damaging communications. Words have power to build or to destroy (Proverbs 18:21).
Hidden in the commander’s enticing offer in v.31 is the sound of exile in v.32! “When sinners entice you, do not consent” (Proverbs 1:10). Note the commander’s worse error in comparing worthless idols of evil nations to the Almighty God (vs.33-35).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
“Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working worders” (Exodus 15:11)? May this be my song always.
