Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 November 2023 MESSAGE:
The “destroyer”—i.e., the nation of Assyria—was dishonest. Like modern day warring factions who often violate peace accords, Assyria deceptively broke the peace treaty between her and Judah (v.8. cf. 2 Kings 18:14-17). Those who break their promises undermine trust and destroy relationships. Christians must seek to be trustworthy in their dealings.
But God gave His people victory over the Assyrians. This chapter is probably a hymn composed to celebrate this amazing deliverance in 701 B.C. However, God is concerned not only to destroy their enemies, but He will burn out sin from among His people (vs.13-16). There is great distress awaiting those who plunder others and destroy the society. These people are deceitful and they take advantage of others. God’s judgment is surely coming upon them. But God still remembers His faithful ones (vs.15-16). Read v.15 again. Does it describe your life?
Vs.17-24 give a picture of the peace and prosperity of Jerusalem when the Lord is given His rightful place as King (vs.17,21,23). So often we miss the peace, joy and blessing that God wants to shower upon us because we have placed self on the throne, although we may still say with our lips that Jesus is our Lord.
Practice/Word Application
And so: Meditate on the wonderful promise in v.22.
