Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 May 2022 MESSAGE
If someone says, “God is sovereign – He knows everything, so there is no need to repeatedly present our needs to Him.” How does the parable of the persistent widow in vs.1‐8 counter that argument? Notice that God’s chosen ones ‘cry out to Him day and night’ (v.7). Some friends prayed for the conversion of someone’s nephew for 19 years before he came to the Lord.
Compare this parable with Matthew 7:7‐11. ‘Ask?, seek?, knock’ are all continuous tense, i.e. keep on asking, seeking, knocking. Jesus’ command could not be clearer! The Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector (vs.9‐14) is full of contrasts. How many can you find? Tax Collectors were utterly despised for being corrupt collaborators with the Romans, while the Pharisees were highly respected religious leaders.
Surely God would accept the Pharisee’s prayer rather than the tax collector’s. But here it was the other way round. Why? The Pharisee proudly prayed about himself (vs.11‐12). He was self‐righteous and thought he did not need forgiveness (see Isaiah 64:6). The tax collector was devastated by his sin and humbly pleaded for forgiveness (v.13). Whose prayer was answered and why? Read v.14.
