Outline: In spite of his initial disregard for the word of God, hardness of heart and fear of his princes, Zedekiah eventually and sincerely seeks Jeremiah’s counsel (v.14). He evidently realized that God might have something to say about the situation of the nation.
This is a good example for us to follow. It is important for us to come to our senses and seek God’s will in order not to end in total destruction. Read vv.17–23 again. What does this tell us about God’s character? Note the consistency in Jeremiah’s message.
These verses show God’s incredible patience for sinners. He had offered opportunity after opportunity for the rulers and the people to return to him, and here again, he was willing to spare the king and his people if they surrender willingly to the Babylonians. Even in the display of his justice, God patiently pursues sinners, but his patience will come to an end one day. What else can we learn from Jeremiah in vv.24–28?
We must not withhold God’s truth from people, but we must not divulge information that can bring evil to God’s people.
