Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Jeremiah 36: 20─32
Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Outline: Different people react differently to God’s word. Observe the reaction of King Jehoiakim and the princes to the word from God (vv.21–26). The same word that the elders heard and were alarmed is what King Jehoiakim heard but burnt the scrolls instead. Why did the King burn the scroll? Take note that only a few people protested the burning of the scroll by the King. This shows how much the Israelites had become insensitive to the things of God.
Read vv.27–32 again. Godless people have attacked the Bible over the ages, but the Bible has outlived them all. We still have Jeremiah’s book in our Bible today, but Jehoiakim has long perished. Today, in many countries, the word of God, the Bible, is still being attacked, not necessarily burnt like Jehoiakim did but disregarded, dishonoured and disobeyed.
However, God’s word can never be destroyed (see Psalm 119:89). Jeremiah and Baruch were not discouraged to write down the word of God again (vv.32). We too must not discourage because of the attacks on God’s word in our generation, but like Jeremiah, do all we can to spread and preserve it for posterity, in the face of persecutions and attacks.
Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Practice/Word Application
• So What? Let no one say there is nothing I can do! Think of specific way you can help to preserve God’s word in your context
Divorce
Divorce is the putting away of one’s spouse or the ending of a relationship between husband and wife. It is occasioned by the breaking of a relationship as intimate as marriage. Divorce is painfully destructive and nothing good comes out of it. The various social vices occurring today in the society are mainly the fall out of the broken homes. Christians marriage is for life. God hates divorce.
Prayer
• Lord, give me grace not to be discouraged but continue to spread your word in spite of attacks.
• Pray for Christian Ministries that either provide free Bibles or are involved in Bible translation into ethnic languages such as Gideon International, Bible Society of Nigeria, etc.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 100:5
