Jesus had sent the twelve to preach (Luke 9:1-5) and in today’s passage, He appointed 70 others and sent them out two by two. Notice the similar instructions He gave to both groups. Why send them out two by two? He sent them into the cities to which He would be going (Luke 10:1c). Why? Notice the heart cry of Jesus in Luke 10:2a. Has this situation changed today? How do we address the imbalance (Luke 10:1,2b, cf. Matthew 4:18-20)? Is the Lord calling you to be a solution to the dearth of harvesters?
Jesus did not hide the hazards His disciples would face in the field, neither did He provide them with weapons, food or money. Rather, all they need is faith in the Lord of the harvest to meet all their need including protection as they face powerful opponents who may try to harm or kill them (Luke 10:4,7).
Today, Jesus is still calling people into His harvest field. Whatever we may encounter from the audience, we should not give up. Our duty is to work faithfully and leave the outcome to the Lord of the harvest (1 Corinthians 4:2). What is the warning and the implication of Luke 10:13-16? Read 2 Corinthians 5:18-20.
