Topic: Jesus returns to His Father
Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
Scripture: Acts 1:1–11
Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
Message: For 40 days, the disciples came to establish the fact that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead. Their testimony is our assurance that Christianity is not a myth, but a faith that is based on solid facts (1John 1:1–4). For the disciples, things must have begun to look normal again, therefore they asked their question in v.6. He had proved that he was superior to the conspiracy of men and the powers of death.
The disciples of Jesus were expecting Him to liberate Israel from Roman domination v.6. Instead, what did he promise them and for what purpose (vv.7–8)? The Father has a timetable for worldwide events and destiny of nations, ours is to fit into his divine agenda. Christ, the head of the church, supplies life to his body. What he began to do and teach (vv.1), the church continues to do as he guides and empowers her through his Spirit. That same power is available to us today, not to make us feel superior but to help us witness.
The world needs to hear that Jesus is alive and he will come again (vv.10–11). Note: Today is Ascension Day. Think of First Fruit. Celebrate it with dancing and fat offering (cf., Leviticus 23:9–14).
Practice/Word Application
• Reflection: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven”
Thou my everlasting portion
1. Thou my everlasting portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
Refrain
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.
2. Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
Nor for fame my prayer shall be;
Gladly will I toil and suffer,
Only let me walk with Thee.
