Today’s reading consists mostly of general truths to guide our conduct in relation to other people and to God. It can be used to provide valuable counsel for a Christian embarking on a business enterprise. Note the strong caution in v.16.
Christians are often naive in trusting other people and thereby suffer undue disadvantage at their hands. It is therefore wise to heed the counsel of vs.18-19 and seek godly advice before embarking on any risky enterprise while avoiding those who cannot control their tongues. We ourselves must be transparent in all our dealings.
The wise person is not vindictive but leaves vengeance to God (v.22; see Romans 12:19). We should place our plans before the Lord and be serious about promises (or vows) we make (vs.24-27). Each season of our life has its peculiarities. Let’s be responsive to our seasons with wisdom (vs.28-30).
