Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 August 2026 Outline

“Hear, O Israel” (Shema Yisrael* in Hebrew) are the first words of Moses’ speech to all Israel. To listen attentively, one must be silent before God (Zephaniah 1:7). After exhorting them to hear the decrees and laws, observe how Moses urges them to learn and follow these.

He repeats the Ten Commandments, given by God at Horeb thirty-eight years earlier to their forefathers, that were at the heart of the covenant (Exodus 20:1-17). These instructions, more than just a list of orders, also apply to the new generation as their covenant. They are essentially the expression of the unique relationship between God and Israel. The emphasis is on love and obedience to God’s commands, also required from us today.

The Ten Commandments give a pattern for a life of consecration to God. As Jesus summarized it in Matthew 22:37-40, all the Law hangs on the two commandments; to love God wholeheartedly and to love our neighbour as ourselves.

The first nine commandments centre on actions or things that are done while the tenth one focuses on the heart and its cravings, a reminder that sin is not only manifested in actions but also in thoughts, desires and attitudes. See Matthew 5:21-22,27-28.

* Shema Yisrael: These words of a section of the Torah are the centrepiece of the morning and evening prayer services of the Jews.
