Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 May 2024 – MESSAGE
How do you react when people make fun of you because of your faith? The coming of the Holy Spirit generated mixed reactions. Some were amazed and sought explanation (v.12), others mocked the disciples (v.13). This, however, gave Peter an opportunity to preach his first sermon, after receiving the Holy Spirit. He explained what just happened to the crowd (vs.14-16). Sometimes, people can misunderstand the expression of our Christian beliefs and brand us with derogatory names. Instead of getting angry, we should seize such opportunities to explain our faith more clearly (1 Peter 2:15-16; 2 Timothy 4:2).
In vs.16-21, Peter told the crowd that what they had just witnessed was fulfilment of scriptures (see Joel 2:28-32). Peter’s explanation shows that the coming of the Holy Spirit also marks the dawning of “the last days” (vs.19-20). It is instructive to note that we are closer to the end now than when Peter gave this message (Romans 13:11-14). What implication does v.21 hold for us? There is assurance that those who call on the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on God if we don’t tell them (Romans 10:14-15)?
