Bible Reading
Jeremiah 45:1-5(KJV)
1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,
2 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch:
3 Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the Lord hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.
4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, The Lord saith thus; Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land.
5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.
Questions for Meditation
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 April 2026: OUTLINE
Baruch was Jeremiah’s special assistant and compiler of his prophetic messages (Jeremiah 45:1). Notice how he responded to the messages he was writing on Jeremiah’s behalf (Jeremiah 45:3). That was exactly how God wanted His people to respond in fear and trembling to the messages He was sending to them through Jeremiah but instead they answered the prophet with pride, arrogance, rebellion, and stubbornness (Jeremiah 44:16). God’s word made Baruch to grieve. He fainted from sighing and was restless (Jeremiah 45:3; compare this with Nehemiah 1:4-5).
How do we react to God’s word today (Isaiah 66:2)? Some people engage in surfing the internet, checking messages or discussing with friends during worship in the church. Is this true of you or someone you know? That amounts to disrespect and contempt for God’s word. Read Jeremiah 45:4-5 again. Observe the warning and the promise given to Baruch. How do these apply to believers today? We should not join men of the world in the rat race of materialism because everything that they are running after would be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:10; 1 John 2:15-17). The most important thing to us should be the salvation of our souls.
