Bible Text
Luke 7:36-50

Meditation Question
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

A similar incident occurred later in Jesus’ ministry as recorded in Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9 and John 12:1-8. Find time to note the difference between this incident and that other cases.

Although the woman was not an invited guest, she entered the house and stood behind Jesus’ feet as He reclined at the table. Notice what else she did (Luke 7:37-38). What lesson(s) do you draw from this? By revealing the evil thought that Simon was entertaining (Luke 7:39), Jesus proved to Simon that He was truly a prophet. Notice how Jesus used the story to expose Simon’s true nature. Contrast this with the nature of the woman (Luke 7:44-47).

It is sometimes said that Jesus Christ never personally claimed that He is God. People of His time, and especially the Pharisees, knew different. In fact, that was one of the main reasons they persecuted Him until they handed Him to the Roman authorities to be crucified. We have a clear example in Luke 7:48-49, where He declared this woman’s sins forgiven. No prophet ever attempted to do the same. By that very act, Jesus was claiming to be God. It was not the first time the Pharisees raised the issue. It was the problem also in Luke 5:20-26.
