Topic: The Birth of John The Baptist Foretold

Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.

INTRODUCTION TO LUKE’S GOSPEL
This book was written at about A.D.60 by Luke, a doctor (Colossians 4:14), a Gentile Christian and close companion of Apostle Paul. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. His aim was to strengthen the faith of the believers and to respond to the critics of the faith. He did that by presenting an accurate and orderly account of the life of Jesus Christ. He was very detailed and thorough in his account as he researched and drew resources from the eyewitnesses, those who walked directly with Christ (Luke 1:1-3). Jesus is clearly presented as the perfect human (Son of man and Son of God) and saviour of the whole world – both Jews and Gentiles.

Scripture: Luke 1:1-17

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

• Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

We are introduced to Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth; who would be John the Baptist’s parents (vs.5-7). Note in v.6 their lineage and record. They were righteous before God. Can that be said about you? Yet they were barren (contrary to Exodus 23:25-26). How does this help us to better understand and respond to the pain of brothers and sisters who serve the Lord and yet experience adverse situations today? Zechariah was found at his duty post. He did not allow his problem to affect his commitment to the Lord (vs.8-9). It was while serving the Lord that the angel visited and brought about a change of story in his life. Perhaps you have a similar case. Read vs.13-14 again and determine never to give up. Continue your service to God. Trust Him never to forget you (1 Corinthians 15:58). Read v.15 and compare with Ephesians 5:18. To fulfil ministry and live a victorious Christian life, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Practice/Word Application
• What next? Reflect on the purpose of John. How are you faring in your walk with the Lord?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Father, help me to be dedicated to your service and so fulfil your purpose for my life.

• Thank God for the blood of Jesus that was shed for our salvation and total deliverance.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with 1 Kings 5:4; Neh. 1-3; Luke 19:1-27
