OPENING PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
SCRIPTURE: Genesis 47.1‐12

Today’s reading is the conclusion of the events which led to Israel migrating from Canaan to settle in Egypt. Joseph’s family received a very warm reception from Pharaoh. Joseph’s privileged position as Prime Minister opened doors for his family. Can you recall what necessitated this migration to Egypt?
In our modern world, what are some of the factors which compel people to migrate from their homelands to other countries? These can be numerous and complex. Since some of the reasons can be compelling, such as refugees fleeing from conflict or, as in the case of Israel, deprivations such as famine, what should be our attitude towards foreigners?
Can you find examples from other parts of the bible on what should be our attitude towards foreigners? Israel’s experience laid the grounds for the exhortations in several parts of the bible on the need to be hospitable to foreigners: “The foreigners residing among you must be treated as your native‐born.
Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt” (Leviticus 19:34). How can we live in obedience to this biblical injunction? Why do you think some countries enact laws which discriminate against foreigners?

• Lord, grant us grace to give a warm welcome to all people especially the strangers and foreigners we come across in our communities.
