TOPIC: Interpreting tragedy

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.

SCRIPTURE: Luke 13:1‐17

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any prayer for me to remember?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 March 2022 MESSAGE

Consider what the re‐telling of this tragic story was meant to serve. How often do you confess specific sin in your prayers? We often readily pray that God should forgive us our sins but we cannot really lay our finger on any particular sin. Since we have not committed adultery, fornication or embezzled money, we often do not consider ourselves sinners like those other people out there – the Galileans and those in Siloam or victims of HIV/AIDS.

The problem is that we have a shallow understanding of sin (see Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:23) else we will not condemn anyone else but ourselves and will seek God’s forgiveness. Note that the ‘sin’ of the fig tree was not murder or robbery but fruitlessness.

How guilty are we of this? Sin results in death (vs.3‐5; cf. Romans 6:23). Praise God that His love for us makes Him seek for our repentance (vs.6‐9; cf. Romans 5:8). Jesus showed mercy to this woman who had been suffering for 18 years. Notice the reaction of the Synagogue ruler.

The religious leaders were less concerned about her pitiable state. Their main concern was more with keeping the Sabbath day ‘holy’. Jesus exposed their hypocrisy, and He often does ours too.

PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
So: How do you react when disaster befalls opponents of the Christian faith?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

CLOSING PRAYER
• Pray for victims of disasters across the world.

Offer a Prayer of Faith in Line with 2 Timothy 1:7

One Year Bible Reading Plan

PRAYER FOCUS
NATIONAL PRAY CONFERENCE 18TH – 20TH

LIFT YOUR EYES ABOVE
I press towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

THANK GOD FOR:
› The privilege of being children of God who have access to our father every day, hour and minute.
› His assurance that he hears us each time we come to Him in fellowship and total obedience to his word.
› Another year of National Prayer Conference.

PRAY FOR:
› The spirit of intercession and spiritual strength to stay more in His presence.
› The continuous manifestation of the Spirit of God in our lives in SU fellowships, our homes and especially during this year National Prayer Conference.
› Grace to constantly set our minds, aspirations, goals and desires to fit in with God’s plan for our lives.

PRAY AGAINST:
∷ Using the world as our yardstick and allowing our lives to be directed by false teachers and people and not by the spirit of God.
∷ Any ministration not coming from God in this conference.
