Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 March 2024 TOPIC: Prayers for Believers In Our World Today

OPENING PRAYER:

Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE:

JOHN 17:14-26

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION

• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 17 March 2024 MESSAGE

The passage began with God’s most important tips and strategies for shunning worldly values and satanic influences in the fallen world. Notice these in vs.14-16. They are meant for you to receive and practise with sincere heart every day.

Purity and holiness are godly tools that fight worldly immorality (v.17). Daily application of God’s word purifies our mind and heart, points out sin and motivates us to confess, renew our relationship with Christ and return to the right path.

We are reminded in vs.18&19 that we are called to be salt and light of the world (Matthew 5:13-16). Hence, God does not take us out of, but calls us to do His work in the world. How useful and relevant have you been to people especially unbelievers? Jesus also prayed for those who would be saved through the ministry of the disciples. This includes those of us who acknowledge Him as our Lord and Saviour today.

Notice again His main concern for the Church and the effect this would have on unbelievers (vs.21-23). Christian unity cannot be achieved by mechanical efforts. We must regularly pray for and promote it. The lack of unity in the body of Christ today may be an indicator of the prayerless state of the Church. What else did the Lord pray for us in v.24?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

THE BEAUTIFUL GARDEN OF PRAYER
1. There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
There’s a place that is wondrously fair,
For it glows with the light of His presence.
’Tis the beautiful garden of prayer.

Refrain
Oh, the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer!
Oh, the beautiful garden of prayer!
There my Savior awaits, and He opens the gates
To the beautiful garden of prayer.

2. There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
And I go with my burden and care,
Just to learn from His lips words of comfort
In the beautiful garden of prayer.

3. There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
And He bids you to come, meet Him there;
Just to bow and receive a new blessing
In the beautiful garden of prayer.

Closing Prayer
Lord, give us the grace of sustainable prayer in a fallen world of evils.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 22:17
“That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;”
