Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 September 2023 Outline:
Yesterday, we saw that the spiritual gifts shine when exercised in love. In today’s passage, Paul encourages the Corinthian Christians to pursue love but not to the neglect of the other gifts, especially prophecy. Why not tongues? Apparently, the Corinthians had elevated tongues to a much higher status than prophecy as a mark of Christian maturity. Paul considers that speaking in tongues is not as useful in congregational meetings unless there is interpretation. Tongues un-interpreted, fails to build up the Body of Christ.
On the other hand, the gift of prophecy operates in a language that the people understand under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The gift has three major benefits as listed in v.3. Prophecy includes both fore-telling (what God intends to do; prediction) and forth-telling or proclamation (expounding God’s mind on every aspect of their lives). We must be careful not to minimize any of these aspects of the gift even though there is the tendency for the gift to be abused. Today, some so-called prophets take delight in predicting only calamities befalling nations and influential people. Some preachers are mere entertainers and not proclaimers of the Gospel of Christ!
