TODAY’S MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th September 2020
David cannot be blamed for mourning his son; but as king, he had to see things in their right perspectives and therefore temper his grief with due regard for many who died to help quell the rebellion. Thankfully, his courageous leader, Joab, confronted him with his error and the implication (vv.5–7).
Unlike Joab, many top public servants only tell their leaders what they think they want to hear, not the truth that will make them accountable to the people. King David regained his balance and took decisive steps to regain the affection of his people (vv.8–10).
On the flip side, misapplying the biblical injunction that we should not mourn as unbelievers, we push bereaved Christians to forget their trauma and quickly go back to normal life, thus preventing them from grieving properly. This may not always be right. We need to deal with such issues with utmost sensitivity. Some may be dealing with deep issues around their grief.
The surprising appointment of the defeated rebel General, Amasa, to replace victorious Joab as Commander of his army served two purposes: First, it restores the loyalty of the rebels who served under Amasa. Second, it penalizes Joab for disobeying David’s clear instruction to spare Absalom. But this is not the end of the story. (We’ll see the end on Saturday).
