Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 April 2020 – Called to serve

Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 April 2020

Topic: Called to serve

Opening Prayer: Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name

Scripture: John 21:15–25

Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Outline: Many of us would claim that we love Jesus, but Jesus’ question to Peter reveals a simple test of our love for the Master. Note how for three times, after Peter’s answer, Jesus followed with a call to service (vv.15–17). Our response to his call to serve his people (his lambs and sheep) and the manner in which we render our service are signs of our love for him.

The love Christ talks about here is agape, the kind of self–giving love he demonstrated and expects his disciple to practise (13:34–35). It is a love that serves. It is a sacrificial love – love that gives all for others. What is your understanding of v.18? Jesus’ statement here indicates that the best time to serve God is when we are young.

Although we must continue to serve until we die, there are things we cannot do when we are old, no matter how much we desire to do them. While Jesus was addressing Peter, Peter was busy thinking of another person’s case (vv.20–22). What can we learn from Jesus’ response to Peter in v.22?

Hymn – Living now in glory
1. We greet the smiling Eastertide,
And sing the bless?d story,
The Lamb of God, the Crucified,
Is living now in glory.

Refrain
Living now in glory,
Living now in glory;
Tell it far and wide, that He who died
Is living now in glory.

2. He lives to take our sins away,

To help us serve Him, every day,
And show His grace and favor.
