Scripture Union Daily Guide 15 June 2026 – OUTLINE
Consider the response of the rich young ruler to what Jesus said he had to do to have eternal life (Luke 18:21). Do you think he was being truthful or ignorant (Luke 18:22-23)? What commandments that Jesus did not mention had he not kept? See Exodus 20:3-6, cf., Colossians 3:5b. Salvation is not based on our good works (Ephesians 2:9). Unfortunately, many today, even some who are committed church goers, are like this ruler. They engage in philanthropic services thinking wrongly that their good works would qualify them for eternity with God. Child-like faith (total surrender or trust) is required to give anyone access to heaven (Luke 18:15-17).
For those of us serving the Lord ‘full time’, do you ever consider yourself at a disadvantage because you do not have plenty of cash like your colleagues in lucrative business, for example? Peter’s question (what they, His disciples, stood to gain by forsaking all to follow Him) according to Luke 18:29-30, appears to come from this same mindset. Consider the benefits you stand to gain if you forsake all to selflessly follow Jesus. So: Determine to honour the Lord with your substance in wholehearted devotion. There is a sure reward as promised in His word: Psalms 128:1-6; Proverbs 11:24-25.
