Scripture Union Daily Guide 14th April 2024 TOPIC: None Like The Lord God

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 46:1-13

1 Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast.

2 They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.

3 Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb:

4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

5 To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.

7 They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

8 Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors.

9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

12 Hearken unto me, ye stouthearted, that are far from righteousness:

13 I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
* Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 14 APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

Notice how the Prophet Isaiah describes the gods of the Babylonians (vs.1,2). The false gods will certainly fail their worshippers when they have most need of them. Bel and Nebo were two celebrated idols of Babylon. While Bel was responsible for the weather and war, Nebo oversaw learning, astronomy, and science.

Interestingly when Babylon fell, those images would be carried away into exile, unable to rescue their city from the enemies and by way of contrast, the Lord would continue to carry and deliver His people even to their old age (vs.3,4). Have you seen people today worn out and let down by the very idols to which they have devoted themselves?

We must therefore stop leaning toward idolatry and remember that only the Lord God has revealed events before they come to pass. He can declare how history will end because He has the power to intervene in the affairs of the world to accomplish all His plans (vs.8-11; see also Psalm 33:11). The man in v.11 is Cyrus. Although Israel is currently “far from righteousness”, how will God use Cyrus to bring “righteousness near to them”? Why is God doing this?

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

HYMN: GOD ALMIGHTY AND ALL SEEING

1. God almighty and all seeing!
Holy One, in whom we all
Live, and move, and have our being,
Hear us when on Thee we call;
Father, hear us,
As before Thy throne we fall.

2. Of all good art Thou the giver,
Weak and wandering ones are we;
Then forever, yea, forever,
In Thy presence we would be;
O, be near us,
That we wander not from Thee.

CLOSING PRAYER
Indeed, Lord, you are the Alpha and Omega, knowing the end from the beginning. May I always place my trust in you to guide me to the expected end.
