Topic: The Consequence of Idol Worship

Opening Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.

Scripture: Jeremiah 44: 1–14

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Message: God does not delight in punishing his people but would rather follow them with compassion warning them to desist from idolatry; the reason for their suffering. Idol worship is not only when we bow down to an image, but also when we share our worship and loyalty to God with any other thing. Our God is a jealous God. We see here that the people refused to repent (vv.2–4).

Notice, how God’s heart goes after the remnant of Judah who are now in Egypt. He continued to warn them (v.4) to desist from idolatry to avoid being devastated and destroyed. Despite all the opportunities God gave them to repent and return to himself, they went ahead to disobey him more and more. They refused to learn from their past experiences (see v.10).

What lesson is there for us today (read Romans 6:23; Ezekiel 18:21, 23)? So, what do you do when your sins are made known to you? Do you humbly acknowledge them and turn away and return to God sincerely or you are hardened and proud and continue to live in the sin?

Practice/Word Application
• Meditate: Proverbs 28:13:1 John1:9

Today’s Hymn – I am Thine, O Lord
1. I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain
Draw me nearer, nearer bless?d Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer bless?d Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. O the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

Prayer Points
• Father, may I always tremble at your word. Help me to acknowledge my sin and turn to you in repentance.
• Thank God for the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 145:18
