Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 June 2026 – OUTLINE
If someone says, “God is sovereign – He knows everything, so there is no need to repeatedly present our needs to Him.” How does the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8 counter that argument? How about the command to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? See also the example of Elijah in 1 Kings 18:41-46; cf. James 5:16b-18.
Notice that God’s chosen ones ‘cry out to Him day and night’ (Luke 18:7). Some friends prayed for the conversion of someone’s nephew for 19 years before he came to the Lord. Compare this parable with Matthew 7:7-11. ‘Ask…, seek…, knock’ are all continuous tense, i.e. keep on asking, seeking, knocking. Jesus’ command could not be clearer! The Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14) is full of contrasts. How many can you find?
Tax Collectors were utterly despised for being corrupt collaborators with the Romans, while the Pharisees were highly respected religious leaders. Surely, God would accept the Pharisee’s prayer rather than the tax collector’s. But here, it was the other way round. Why? Self-exaltation is pride, which God hates. What kind of a person does God justify according to Luke 18:14? Also read James 4:6-10. There is no one who is too sinful for the Lord to cleanse if they come in repentance.
Closing Prayer
Clothe me, O Lord, with the garment of humility to be persistent in prayer, always trusting that you will answer me.
