Opening Prayer

Scripture Reading
Matthew 22:15-22
15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
Question for Meditation
► Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Scripture Union Daily Guide – 14 August 2025 – OUTLINE
The Pharisees thought they had backed Jesus into a corner with their trick question. Both a “Yes” and a “No” answer would land Him in trouble. If He answered them by simply encouraging paying taxes to the hated Romans, He would be seen as a traitor by the people He was seeking to save. If He said not to pay, He would be arrested by the Roman authorities. His answer sent them away in shameful amazement (Matthew 22:22). Sadly, it is an answer that is often misapplied.
Our bus got to a roadblock and the Police would not let us continue our journey; but the driver was not keen to give them yet another bribe. One of my fellow passengers rebuked the driver for causing the delay. “After all, even the Bible says to render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s!”
That is exactly what the Bible says and means. The driver should give to the Police what the Law says belongs to the Police. These include evidence that the vehicle is properly taxed, is road-worthy, and is not carrying unlawful goods. It certainly does not include a bribe!
