MESSAGE: Paul describes what practical Christianity should be within the family. Wives – submit, husbands – love, children – obey, and slaves – obey, not with eye service but with sincerity of heart and purpose. Each one is to discharge their responsibilities unconditionally, as if doing it for the Lord. Unfortunately, the biblical concept of submission has been misunderstood in some societies. Many women have been made to suffer under the tyrannical control of their husbands.
Where there is mutual respect, discord is eliminated. For more detailed study on this subject, see Ephesians 5:21-6:9. The submission of the wife according to the Bible is a willingness to recognize the authority of the husband in the home, as unto the Lord. In exercising his authority, the husband must do so with love and not with harshness. Parents should always bear in mind that children learn a lot by just watching them. They should therefore ensure that their actions and inactions point the children to the Lord and not away from Him.
