TOPIC: Partners in Ministry!

OPENING PRAYER: Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.

Introduction to Philippians
Paul founded the church in Philippi, the first city he visited after receiving clear call from the Lord to turn his attention to Macedonia (Europe) (Acts 16:8-40). The church in Philippi became a key supporter of Paul’s ministry sending financial help to him often. They also sent Epaphroditus to visit him while in prison (2:25). This letter was partly a thank you message. In addition, the letter addresses some of the problems in the church including unhealthy rivalries and false teaching. The topic of humility is expounded in the letter. Paul cited the example of the humility of Christ (2:3-8) and the selflessness of both Timothy and Epaphroditus. Even though Paul was suffering in prison, his appeal to the brethren was to rejoice always and in every situation. Prison never dampened his joy.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Philippians 1:1-11

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 12 November 2023 MESSAGE:

Paul expresses deep appreciation to the Philippians who supported him to fulfil God’s purpose in their generation. Note the key reasons he gives for his gratitude to them (vs.3-8). God begins a good work in our lives when we surrender our lives to Christ and He expects us to continue in it to the end.

Even when you feel discouraged, remember that God will not give up on you. He will finish His work in you (v.6). As we help our ministers, missionaries and evangelists through prayer, hospitality, and financial gifts, we partner with them in spreading the gospel. The next thing Paul does is to pray for the church and Christians in Philippi (vs.9-11).

Go through these verses and note his main concern for them. Grateful Christians will sincerely pray for those who love and support them. We learn from Paul how to pray for believers who partner with us to spread, defend, and confirm the gospel.

Paul’s inspiring example of preaching the gospel was seen even in prison (see Acts 16:22-36). Never allow hindrances, whether small or large, to slow down your work for God (v.7).
