The fact that Jesus had to tell his disciples about his death for the third time in one week (vs.17-19) suggests that the disciples had not fully grasped His message or perhaps the message of chapter 18:1-5 had not sunk in properly. No wonder, while Jesus was facing the challenge of his impending trial and death, the disciples were having a different preoccupation (see vs.20-21, 24).
Many of the divisions and fights in the church of God today have to do with leadership issue. People want to be foremost leaders and to get there, they fight and do all sorts of questionable things including campaigning like a politician or invoking the influence of godfathers (vs.20-21). The truth is that Christ is the only head of the church – not any man.
The rest of us are merely servants in the household of God with different gifts, talents and assignments for the building up of the body. Leadership from God’s perspective means service to Him and to others in total humility and obedience to God. Ponder seriously on vs.26-28. Our Lord models servant leadership and calls us to follow suit.

• Lord endow me with the spirit of humility, of service to you and to mankind. • Pray for Missionaries witnessing for Christ in their various mission fields: some fields are fiercely hostile, due to war, religion or political creed.
