• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? • Is there any prayer for me to remember?
David realized his utter helplessness in tackling the problems of life and cried to his God for urgent intervention. How much value do you place on prayer in your daily life (v.1,2)? All human actions, good or bad, originate from the heart (see Matthew 12:35). He knew his heart and lips could constitute very serious obstacles to his prayer.
Evil thoughts and corrupt words defile the whole body (see James 3:6) and hinder prayers. David’s prayer in vs. 3,4 is very important. Holiness is not optional in the worship of God. Rather it is a central demand (1 Peter 1:15,16) and a precondition for seeing God (see Hebrews 12:14).
David knew that the company of evildoers would corrupt him. In Psalm 1:1 he declared those who avoid evil men as blessed. Therefore, he kept away from them and fixed his eyes on God (v.8). So too must we. Most people hate to be criticized but everybody can benefit from a constructive and wise criticism if humbly accepted.
According to David, being rebuked by a godly person is a kindness. It is wise not to refuse or reject it but to meekly accept and make the best of it.
